"The TKO Show" Episode 1

In this episode, the very first, we take a look back at last week's main event fight in Carson, CA at the Stubhub Center where a fight of the year candidate brawl took place between Robert Guerrero and Yoshihiro Kamegai. My guest, and mother,  is on the show to discuss the fight with me and we'll give our impressions on each fighter's performance.

A Look at 5 Boxing Podcasts

HBO Boxing
http://feeds.soundcloud.com/users/soundcloud:users:82132148/sounds.rss

Two hosts: boxing journalists Kieran Mulvaney and Eric Raskin who work on behalf of HBO Boxing, one of the biggest subscription networks that shows prizefighting other than Showtime. Microphones being used have top-notch sound quality and other than a brief HBO musical theme at the beginning there are no additional effects or music. Format of show is very straight forward; talk about HBO’s most recent fight card from the past Saturday and talk about the news surrounding the fighters from that night and their prospects going forward.

Tha Boxing Voice

Very small scale and much more informal format than “HBO Boxing.” Hosts are a panel of five boxing fans/journalists. Format of show is for primary host, Nestor Gibbs, to direct flow of the conversation and otherwise subdue heated conversations, which happens frequently.  Hosts are loud, taking turns to talk in long drawn out monologues to make their points, which can get dull unless you’re a hardcore fan who understands the context of the in-depth conversations. Throughout the show, the hosts turn to live listener call-ins for more content to discuss in the word of boxing. Audio quality is inconsistent; hosts sound like they’re either in front of a microphone or on Skype/calling from their cell phone. Very middle-of-the-road round table discussion podcast.

LukieBoxing

Single host with occasional +1 guest to help drive discussions. Primary host, Lucas Ketelle, is a local boxing journalist in the Bay Area who discusses global and local boxing news. Show has intro music/theme that changes from episode to episode and audio has hissing that should be eliminated in post-production. Points made about fighters and the business surrounding them are accurate and informative but the way that news is talked about makes for lots of awkward pauses and hosts stumbling over each other. Good amateur podcast.

ESPN: Heavy Hitting Boxing Podcast

Hosted by boxing journalist, Kieran Mulvaney, this podcast discusses boxers and boxing events that are significant to Mulvaney, usually coinciding with his contract work with HBO. While production quality is fantastic and the discussions usually intelligent, updates to the podcast as far apart as months leading to a major drop in stock. However, content is always a pleasure to listen to with lots of discussion dedicated to the health/safety of boxers. Favorite aspect of show is the monologue style of Mulvaney who takes his time to make a point leading to many dramatic pauses and inflections.

Inside the Ropes Radio

Another informal but reputable boxing podcast due to the fact that nearly every episode has a guest from the boxing world (fighters, trainers, etc.).  While audio quality is lacking almost across the board for the show’s 3-4 hosts, discussion is always top notch with a great mix of informal banter and professional criticisms of what is happening on the business side of the fight game. Guest speakers are almost always interesting to hear from or about and keep the show fresh and new. What this podcasts lacks in production quality it more than makes up for in content.
